hello, world…again

After an extended break of a few years without a blog or online notebook I recently created this new personal site – welcome!

Why now?

It feels like there is somewhat of a resurgence or renaissance in blogging at the moment that I would like to be part of. A move back to more thoughtful, longer-form discussions and away from the toxic swamp of Twitter/X feels like a good thing.

Also, the longer I spend working in design/technology, the more I see a number of persistent themes repeating that I would like to get into, explore and discuss. An online notebook feels like a good place for that. These notes will probably be revisited and evolve over time – I don’t see this as a traditional linear blog necessarily, hence the conscious decision to call it a digital notebook. My aim is to create evergreen content rather than posts with a short shelf life.

Out with the old (Guard)

My previous site name (Old Guard) was a holdover from when I was a freelancer and ran my own shop. Having used this name for north of a decade it felt like the right time to start fresh with something that better suits what I want to do with this site.

I was looking for a decent domain name for a site that would predominantly be a notebook discussing the thinking behind the craft of design. I stumbled across Designing Design and felt that it fit the bill.
